DIRECTIONS FOR USE

Fasting prior to dosing is not necessary. IT IS ESSENTIAL TO WEIGH DOGS BEFORE TREATMENT.

For intestinal worms - DRONTAL is given as a single oral dose by mouth. * refer to dosing recommendations

If worm problems persist, consult a veterinarian.

For Giardia infection - Administer the above respective dosage for three consecutive days. DRONTAL should ONLY be used when Giardia sp. infection has been diagnosed by a veterinarian.

HYDATID TAPEWORM

A single dose of DRONTAL is all that is required. Dogs in hydatid areas should be treated every 6 weeks to ensure that newly acquired hydatid tapeworms are expelled before reaching maturity. DOGS SHOULD NOT BE FED, OR ALLOWED TO FEED ON, OFFAL FROM ANY SPECIES. It is important to ensure that the dog does not acquire offal in order to break the life cycle of the hydatid tapeworm. It should be noted that hydatid tapeworm poses a severe risk to human health by transmission to humans from infected dogs.

HOOKWORMS & ROUNDWORMS

Dogs and Puppies: treat at 2,4,8 and 12 weeks and then every month until six months of age; thereafter every three months or on veterinary advice.

Pregnant Bitches: treat prior to mating, then 10 days before whelping and at 2 and 4 weeks after whelping.

WHIPWORMS & TAPEWORMS

Treat every three months except in hydatid tapeworm areas where every six weeks is recommended, or on veterinary advice.

Dogs can become reinfested with worms and treatment should be repeated. Worms, if present, may not appear in the droppings at all, or may not appear for up to 48 hours after treatment.

GIARDIA

This protozoan parasite is found commonly in dogs and may be the cause of diarrhoea, particularly in pups. It is more common amongst dogs living in multi-dog households and kennels. Giardia also occurs in humans and has historically been considered a potential zoonosis, however recent studies suggest that host-specific species may exist. Control of Giardia is difficult because the oocysts are resistant and long-lived in the environment. Diagnosis of suspected Giardia infection should be confirmed by a veterinary surgeon. Some evidence indicates that bathing and a move to a non-contaminated environment in conjunction with treatment will improve overall control.

Retreatment Recommendations

Worms often reinfest dogs, so it is necessary to:

  • treat the dog itself
  • reduce environmental contamination by daily disposal of droppings
  • remove tapeworm intermediate hosts, eg fleas

Follow the retreatment recommendations in the table below:

PUPPIES

ADULTS

PREGNANT/LACTATING BITCHES

Treat at 2,4,8,12 weeks; then 4,5,6 months of age

Every 3 months. Every 6 weeks in hydatid infested locations

Prior to mating, 10 days before whelping and 2 and 4 weeks after whelping.

These recommendations are of a general nature. In specific instances where infestation is particularly heavy or many dogs are housed together, a veterinary surgen should be consulted. Flea tapeworms can reinfect dogs and begin producing segments 2-3 weeks after a treatment. If segments reappear before the next DRONTAL treatment is due, either retreat with DRONTAL or use DRONCIT as an intermediate, tapeworm only, treatment.

Parasites & Pests

  • Sheep Measles

Sheep measles (Cysticercus ovis) are a cystic stage in the life cycle of the dog tapeworm Taenia ovis. Sheep measles do not cause any obvious signs of ill health in affected sheep or any economic loss on-farm. The disease does cause massive economic loss to the abattoirs through carcass condemnation & export restrictions on the sale of meat from affected mobs. Depending on the particular farm, the disease can be prevalent in a large percentage of the in…
